Discover Hemsedal as a Trail Running Destination

What makes Hemsedal stand out for mountain running? According to Jonatan Eklöf, one of the experienced trail runners living in the valley, it’s all about the variety:

“You’ll find a wide range of trail options. Want an easy jog through the forest or a tough mountain run? Both start right outside your door. The trails are super flexible – you can easily adjust for distance and elevation.”

Top Trail Running Routes in Hemsedal

There’s no shortage of stunning routes, but here are a few favourites:

  • Long and varied: Start in the village centre, follow the Hemsila river, climb over Geiteberget, continue across Skurvefjell, and loop back to town. This one’s a perfect mix of flat stretches, climbs, epic views, and changing terrain.

  • Short and snappy: The Grønås-trail loop – a shorter but action-packed route with some elevation.

  • The Topp20 trails: A perfect starting point for mountain running. Pick one of Hemsedal’s 20 signature peaks and hit the trails with stunning views all around.

When to Run – Hemsedal’s Trail Season

The trail running season kicks off when the mountains have dried up – usually in June – and lasts until the snow returns sometime in October. With the summer lift running from July to mid-August, you can start your run at 1,100 metres above sea level and dive straight into epic alpine terrain – without having to climb from the valley floor.

Gear – What Do You Need?

The great thing about trail running is that you don’t need a ton of gear. But here are a few tips from local runner Jonatan Eklöf:

  • Trail shoes with good grip – essential when running in mountain terrain.

  • Running vest – ideal for longer runs so you can bring water and some energy snacks.

  • Light clothing – the weather in the mountains can change quickly, so a windbreaker is often a smart choice.

Pro tip:

“The best advice when running uphill is to not start too hard – or the rest of the run might get really tough!”

Mix Trail Running With Other Adventures

After a solid mountain session, what could be better than winding down at Fyri Pool Club, Skarsnuten Spa, or Skogstad Wellness?
For those who want even more action, trail running pairs perfectly with mountain biking, climbing, and of course, cooling off in rivers and mountain pools.
