Mountain walks for all ages

In Hemsedal, the mountains are always close – and many hikes are well suited for families.

Storhøvda is a popular family hike with a steady incline and rewarding views. From the top you can see Skogshorn, the lakes towards Lykkja and the surrounding peaks near the village including the waterfall Hydnefossen, Storehorn, and Veslehorn. It’s manageable for children and gives a great sense of achievement.

Right in the centre of Hemsedal you’ll find Steget, an easy and historic trail that follows an old path used by animals heading up to the mountain pastures. Along the way you pass old summer farms and enjoy views over the village. If you want a longer challenge, you can continue from the same starting point towards Kyrkjebønnøse.

For families who enjoy clear goals and small rewards, the Top 20 hikes are a great option. These include everything from short walks for younger children to longer routes for those who want to push a bit further. Along the way, you may also find the perfect spot for a picnic or a refreshing dip to cool tired feet.

Cycling for the whole family

Hemsedal offers cycling for all levels – from relaxed gravel roads to playful flow trails.

At Hemsedal Rides you’ll find purpose-built trails in different difficulty levels. Children can try short, easy loops, while more confident riders can enjoy longer and faster trails. Silverstone is a popular blue flow trail that offers a fun and accessible ride for many.

If you prefer a calmer day on two wheels, there are plenty of gravel roads ideal for family cycling. In the Hemsedal app you’ll find maps and overviews of marked routes and trails.

Don’t have your own bike with you? No problem – there are several places in Hemsedal offering bike rental for both children and adults.

Swimming spots and refreshing breaks

On warm summer days, a swim is hard to beat. Around Hemsedal you’ll find many natural pools and swimming sports along rivers and streams, often close to hiking trails.

The clear mountain water is wonderfully refreshing, although the temperature stays cool even in mid-summer. Always pay attention to safety, as some areas are not suitable for swimming. Make sure you know where it is safe before jumping in.

Hemsedal is where mountains, nature, and unforgettable experiences come together. Bring your family on a summer adventure you’ll always remember – all you need is a little curiosity and a sense of fun.

Farm life and animal experiences

For many families, meeting animals is one of the highlights of a summer holiday in the mountains.

At Dalo Fjellgård, visitors can experience real farm life in beautiful surroundings. During summer, the farm is open for visits on selected days, where both children and adults can meet alpacas, sheep, hens, pigs and ducks – and enjoy a calm break from busy holiday schedules.

One of the most popular experiences is alpaca walking, where you can go for a gentle walk in the landscape together with these curious and friendly animals. It’s a unique and memorable activity that suits both children and adults, and offers a slower pace in the middle of an active holiday.

The farm also offers other animal-based experiences at certain times, such as wheeled dog sledding. After your visit, you can relax with something to eat and, if available, bring home local products from the farm.

Food breaks with a taste of the mountains

After an active day outdoors, good food tastes even better.

Hemsedal offers everything from traditional baked goods at Flatbrødbakerietin Tuv and cosy cafés to restaurants serving dishes based on local ingredients. Some places are centrally located in the village, while others make perfect stops along hiking and cycling routes.

Along the trails in Hemsedal Rides you can enjoy a bite at Fjellkafeenor Lodgen Spiseri, and don’t miss the excellent dining at Skigaarden, Fyri, and Skarsnuten Hotel.

Take time to sit down and enjoy the moment – often that’s when the best holiday memories are made.
