Mountain hikes for ordinary people in Hemsedal

These are mountain hikes for ordinary people. For those who love the feeling of being in the mountains — without needing to turn it into a full-blown expedition.

Karisetberget

A short hike with a big reward

Karisetberget is perfect for days when you want a proper mountain experience without spending the entire day hiking. The trail is easy to follow, the distance feels manageable and the views arrive surprisingly quickly.
This is one of those classic Hemsedal hikes where you get a lot back for the effort you put in. Great for families with children, groups of friends or anyone who enjoys mountain hiking a little more than the idea of extreme exhaustion.

Bring coffee and something good for your backpack — this is the kind of place where people often stay longer than planned simply because the views are too good to leave behind. The waterfall Rjukandsfossen is just beneth you when you stand at the mountain top.

If your in to Blueberries, you'll find alot of them along the trail.

Veslehødn

One hike, several experiences

Veslehødn is a great choice if you want a hike that feels varied and rewarding without becoming too demanding.

The start is a little steep, but do not let that scare you off. Once you get through the first section, the trail becomes much calmer and easier to enjoy.

Along the way you can experience:

  • Hydnefossen waterfall
  • Hydnekjaften - read the myth - unmarked trail here and very steep so be careful
  • wide mountain views over Skogshorn, Nibbi and Hemsedal center
  • streams and small scenic stops, maybe a dip in the lake on a warm day
  • the summit of Veslehødn itself

The changing landscape makes the hike feel exciting the whole way up.

And yes — this is absolutely the type of hike where your phone ends up full of mountain photos and slightly sweaty summit selfies.

If you or someone in your group wants to make the hike a little longer, Storehødn can easily be added to the same trip. Adding this extra summit will extend the hike by around 1–2 hours, but rewards you with even bigger views and an even more impressive high mountain experience.

Harahødn

High mountain feeling without the stress

Harahødn gives you exactly the kind of mountain atmosphere many people picture when they think about summer in Hemsedal. Open landscapes, crisp mountain air and views that somehow make your shoulders relax automatically.

The hike is manageable for most people who are reasonably used to walking, and the reward at the top feels much bigger than the actual effort required to get there. The hike takes around 3 hours and the view is absolutly magical the whole way up.

Perfect for those who want the full mountain experience without needing months of preparation beforehand.

Raudberg

A mountain hike with streams beside the trail

Some hikes are just as much about the journey as the summit itself. Raudberg is one of them. A stream follows parts of the trail, making the hike especially beautiful on warm summer days. It is easy to find small places to stop along the way — take off your shoes, cool your feet in the water, fill up the waterbottle or simply sit quietly for a while and enjoy the stillness.

The hike feels calmer than many others in the area, but the views from the top still deliver that proper Hemsedal mountain feeling. On clear days you see all the way over to Jotunheimen.

Bjøbergnøse

Big views without turning it into a full-day project

Bjøbergnøse is one of those hikes that gives you the feeling of being properly out in the high mountains without the hike needing to feel extreme.

Here, you will find wide open mountain landscapes, fresh air and panoramic views stretching far across Hemsedal. At the same time, the hike itself is manageable for ordinary hikers simply looking for a really good day outdoors. Even the drive towards Bjøberg is worth the trip alone, with the famous “airstrip” and dramatic mountain scenery creating a landscape that has featured in several commercials and film productions over the years.

The trail follows an easy and scenic path before gradually leading you along the mountain ridge towards the summit, where beautiful views open up across this quieter and more untouched part of Hemsedal.

This is the perfect place for long breaks, packed lunches in the sun and that satisfying feeling of being just far enough away from everyday life. And if you are lucky, you might even spot reindeer along the way, as the owner of Bjøberg Høyfjellsgard also works with reindeer together with Filefjell Reinlag.

Find your next hike in the Hemsedal app

In the Hemsedal app you will find trail maps, hike descriptions and inspiration for both short and longer mountain hikes. It is a great tool for planning ahead or simply finding a hike that matches the weather, your energy levels and how ambitious you actually feel that day.

The app also makes it easy to discover family-friendly hikes, scenic viewpoints and nearby activities along the way.

Snacks along the way is the best

Mountain hiking in Hemsedal is not about being the fastest

It is easy to think hiking has to be about altitude metres, long distances and how early you started in the morning.

But the best mountain hikes in Hemsedal are often about something completely different:

  • finding the perfect rock for your packed lunch
  • listening to the stream beside the trail
  • taking too many photos of the view
  • getting pleasantly tired
  • spending longer outside than originally planned
  • Taking those dips in cold turcoise water along the way

Nobody hands out medals for reaching the summit first here.

Before you head out

Mountain weather changes quickly, even in the middle of summer. Always bring:

  • an extra warm layer
  • a windproof or waterproof jacket
  • water
  • snacks or a packed lunch
  • proper shoes

And maybe most importantly: Do not rush the experience. Mountain views rarely get worse because you stopped for one more break.
