Practical information

What’s the difference between the basic and the advanced course?
The basic course builds the foundation: safe travel, snowpack knowledge, route choice and companion rescue. The advanced course takes you further with deeper terrain analysis, independent decision-making and more complex scenarios.

Are the courses suitable for beginners?
Basic course: yes, absolutely.
Advanced course: best for those with previous avalanche training or equivalent experience.

Where do the courses take place?
In the mountains around Hemsedal. Instructors choose terrain that offers safe and effective learning conditions.

Are the courses practical or theoretical?
Mainly practical. Most of the learning happens outdoors in real situations.

How many participants per instructor?
A maximum of 6 per guide for focused learning.

Do I need my own equipment?
Bring your own ski equipment and winter clothing. Avalanche gear (transceiver, shovel, probe) can be borrowed if needed.

What happens in bad weather?
The course goes ahead, but the instructors adapt terrain and plans to the conditions. Safety always comes first.

What are the requirements for the advanced course?
You should have completed the basic course or have equivalent experience. The advanced course is required if you plan to apply for NF’s method course in avalanche instruction.
