The Brekkefoss mill was built early in the 1800s and was in use until the 1920s, and most of the grain from the northern part of the village was ground here. It is still uncertain when grain cultivation began in Hemsedal, but grain was grown up to 900 meters above sea level. Late spring, cold summers, and frost nights made grain cultivation in the village challenging. If there was a risk of frost night, it was mandatory to light large bonfires near the fields so that the smoke would settle in the valley bottom and block the cold air. People then were completely dependent on the mills to get food on the table, and up to 200kg of flour was ground at Brekkefoss every day.
Brekkefoss mill is unique in that it has two floors and two millstones. The reason is that the mill was used and owned by many. The millhouse is made of timber, and in the past, one could see carvings in the wood which, according to folk belief, were meant to protect against the nøkk and other witchcraft on dark autumn nights. Grain cultivation in Hemsedal ended in the mid-1950s.
Brekkefoss mill is open for visits, but the mill is only in use during demonstrations.
