About the Film
The documentary SKI follows renowned skier Nikolai Schirmer, who discovers that his childhood friend, Vegard Rye, is preparing for an extraordinary ski expedition in spring 2024: a journey across 27 mountains in Northern Norway, non-stop, over four days. The film premieres in Norwegian cinemas on January 31st.
Internationally acclaimed skier and filmmaker Nikolai Schirmer learns that his reclusive childhood friend is training for an unimaginable feat:
Vegard Rye is preparing to climb and ski down 27 mountains in one continuous tour. The challenge is equivalent to running four marathons while summiting Mount Everest from sea level—three times. To achieve this superhuman feat, Vegard isolates himself from friends and family, lives in caves, and dedicates his entire existence to training. For years, he carries heavy loads up the same mountain several times a day.
Vegard has no intention of telling anyone about his accomplishment, but Nikolai is determined to share his friend's story with the world, pitching it to sponsors as "The Greatest Ski Tour Of All Time." Along the way, Nikolai attempts to adopt Vegard's rigorous training methods to elevate his own skiing. However, he quickly realizes that telling a story is far easier than living it. And looming over everything is the question of why he lost his best friend and mountain partner so many years ago.
